A shooting at Florida State University resulted in the deaths of 2 people and left 6 others injured. A video shared on social media after the incident highlighted the insensitivity of another student who filmed the situation while passing by an injured student. The attack was carried out by 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner.
Two people were killed and six others were injured in a shooting that occurred at Florida State University in recent days. However, a video shared on social media after the incident drew significant backlash by highlighting the indifference of students on campus.
The footage shows a student passing by their classmate, who is lying motionless on the ground in a pool of blood, holding a Starbucks iced coffee, and instead of helping, they are seen recording the situation on video.
In the video taken after the attack organized by 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, who used his police officer mother's gun, a young woman student is seen lying motionless on the grass with the back of her blue jeans soaked in blood and her white top pulled up. Another unnamed student walks by her, calmly recording a video instead of helping.
A student named Max Jenkins, who witnessed the attack, described the incident to the Tallahassee Democrat newspaper: "The attacker first shot at an officer who was trying to protect the students, but the bullet hit a golf cart. Then he turned this way and started shooting in the green area. This girl was shot in the hip and lay on the ground for a while. Later, the police carried her away on a stretcher."
The video shared on social media received widespread criticism. Many users commented, "The person who filmed this video should go to jail. This is a sick behavior," while some users stated, "Students have become so accustomed to school shootings that they have become desensitized."
It was revealed that the attacker, Phoenix Ikner, is the son of Jessica Ikner, who works for the Leon County Sheriff's Department. Authorities reported that the young man had "access to one of his mother's guns and that the weapon found at the scene was this one."
It was discovered that Ikner shared a violent quote from the Bible on his social media accounts and wrote posts mocking students protesting the results of the 2024 presidential election in the university magazine.
The Tallahassee Police Department stated that the attacker was shot and injured because he resisted during his arrest and is currently being held under observation in the hospital.
Florida State University canceled all classes and events following the incident. The injured were taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. A hospital spokesperson reported that one person's condition is critical, while others are serious.
