49-year-old Jennifer Lee Wilson, who lives in the USA, was sentenced to 6 years in prison for crushing her 10-year-old stepson Dakota Stevens to death. The tragic incident occurred after the child attempted to report previous abuse to the police.
The incident took place on April 25, 2024. According to Wilson's statement, Dakota had not listened throughout the day and had refused to do household chores. The child, who ran away from home, asked a woman a few streets away to call the police, but Wilson forcibly took Dakota back home, telling the woman not to get involved.
Security camera footage showed that Wilson, who weighs 154 pounds, lay on top of Dakota, who weighed only 41 pounds, rendering him immobile. Wilson stated that she remained on the child for about five minutes and thought his stillness was a trick.
Unconscious Dakota was taken to the hospital but died two days later. The autopsy report indicated that the cause of death was brain swelling and prolonged oxygen deprivation. Additionally, organ damage and internal bleeding were found in the child's body.
In October, Wilson, who accepted the charge of involuntary manslaughter, was sentenced to 6 years in prison, the maximum penalty that could be imposed by the court. The incident once again highlighted the lack of oversight in the foster care system and the tragic consequences of child abuse.
