In the Mazıdağı district of Mardin, a suspect who was arrested for allegedly attempting to kill his father by planting a bomb in his vehicle to receive a share of the inheritance, along with three friends who assisted him, appeared before a judge. In his statement at the court, the father expressed that he was not complaining about his son and requested his release, saying, "I do not accept such a punishment. My son definitely has no intention or attempt to kill me. I want his release."

On June 30, 2024, in the Karşıyaka neighborhood of the Mazıdağı district in Mardin, Polat E., who harbored hatred towards his brother R.E. for mistreating him, planned to kill his father Mehmet E. with his friends Abas A., Berkant K., and Baran A. in order to receive a share of the inheritance.

PLANS FELL APART WHEN FATHER DISCOVERED THE BOMB DEVICE

The bomb device set up by Berkant K. was placed in Mehmet E.'s service vehicle by Baran A. Mehmet E. noticed the device when he became suspicious of the bag and left it in an abandoned building. Berkant K. later attempted to detonate the device remotely. The explosion occurred just as Mehmet E. was about to enter his residence. There were no casualties or injuries in the incident.

REQUEST FOR PRISON SENTENCE OF UP TO 29 YEARS

In the investigation initiated after the explosion, Polat E. and his friends Abas A., Baran A., and Berkant K. were detained and arrested. An indictment was prepared regarding the incident, and a case was filed at the Mardin 5th High Criminal Court. In the indictment, a prison sentence of 18 to 29 years was requested for the defendants on charges of 'Attempted murder' and 'Possession or transfer of dangerous substances without permission.'

"THE CHILD WHO WAS ANGRY WITH HIS FATHER PLANNED TO TEACH A LESSON"

Polat E.'s lawyer Özlem Dündar, speaking to reporters outside the courthouse, claimed that the incident was not as reflected in the prosecution's opinion, stating, "Unfortunately, the incident started as 'Damage to property' and has now escalated to 'Attempted murder.' However, the content of the case is not as it was just described or as it occurred in court. The incident began with a child angry at his father wanting to damage his father's vehicle to teach him a lesson. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the explosive material in question being classified as 'Murder,' my client is currently being prosecuted for 'Attempted murder,' and as a result, due to being a first-degree relative, it is classified as aggravated. Currently, he is being prosecuted for attempting to kill his father, whom he intended to scare. Therefore, we do not accept this opinion. We absolutely do not accept it as it has been previously reported in the media. There is no intention whatsoever on my client's part to kill his father. The consequence of his actions, which were intended to scare his father, should not result in such a penalty. Therefore, we seek justice. We do not accept this opinion in any way. A decision will be made on May 6. If a decision is made in this way, it will cause serious victimization and will not be a legal decision. We do not want this decision to be made in any way. My client should only be prosecuted for property damage, not for attempted murder and its aggravated form. My client and his wife, mother, father, and everyone else are absolutely stating that this person’s children did not commit such an act. They know their children best. For this reason, there will be a lot of victimization. We do not want this. We request my client's acquittal from the court. I hope a fair decision will come from the court," she said.

REQUESTED HIS SON'S RELEASE: THERE IS NO INTENT OR ATTEMPT TO KILL ME

Mehmet E., the father of the defendant Polat E., stated that he is not complaining about his son and requested his release, saying, "My son had a dispute with his brother; there were such conflicts in the house, but it was not a big deal. I had also wronged him, saying, 'Why are you doing this to your brother?' He went and placed such a device in my car to scare me. I do not accept such a punishment. My son absolutely has no intent or attempt to kill me. I want his release," he said.
