Frightening moments were experienced in front of the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York, USA.
Around 18:30 local time, a man came to the front of the complex, left a Tibetan flag and protest leaflets, and then set himself on fire. The 52-year-old individual, who was seriously injured, was quickly rushed to Bellevue Hospital by health teams who intervened. Authorities announced that the protester died despite all interventions.
"CHINA, GET OUT OF TIBET"
It was reported that the leaflets at the scene read "China, get out of Tibet." It was claimed that the person who died by self-immolation was the Tibetan independence activist Lobga Rangzen. However, this claim has not yet been confirmed by official authorities. A detailed investigation into the incident has been launched.
TIBET'S STATUS HAS BEEN A SUBJECT OF CONTROVERSY
China launched a military intervention in Tibet in 1950, and after the 17-point agreement signed in 1951, the Beijing administration established its control over the region. The Tibetan side, however, argued that the agreement was signed under duress. Following the harsh suppression of the Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule in 1959, the spiritual leader Dalai Lama took refuge in India, where a Tibetan exile government was established. China has maintained its control over Tibet since then. Tibet's status has been a subject of controversy internationally.
