In Hong Kong, a 68-year-old woman pushed and slapped a 5-year-old girl who was arguing with her grandchild over basketball in a shopping mall. After the incident, in which the little girl fell to the ground, the families of both parties also got involved in a fight. In her statement to the police, the woman said, "She was bullying my grandchild; I wanted to teach her a lesson," and she was sentenced by the court to 20 days in prison and a fine of 2,000 Hong Kong dollars.
A basketball argument that started between two children at a shopping mall playground in Hong Kong turned into a fight involving adults. As footage emerged of 68-year-old Leung Lai-ha pushing and slapping a 5-year-old girl who had argued with her grandson, the incident went to court.
SHE SLAPPED THE LITTLE GIRL WHO ARGUED WITH HER GRANDSON
The incident occurred at the APM shopping mall in Hong Kong's Kwun Tong district. Leung Lai-ha, who took her grandson to the sports-themed playground set up on the mall's ground floor, intervened in an argument that broke out between two children over a basketball setup.
The 68-year-old woman first pushed the 5-year-old girl who had argued with her grandson, then slapped her in the face. The little girl fell to the ground from the impact, and swelling formed on her cheek.
"I WANTED TO TEACH HER A LESSON"
In her statement to police after the incident, Leung admitted hitting the little girl. Stating that she thought her grandson was being bullied, the woman said, "She was bullying my granddaughter. That's why I pushed her and slapped her to teach her a lesson."
It was reported that Leung also pleaded guilty at the hearing held on August 26 and said she hit the little girl in a moment of anger.
THE MOTHERS ALSO JOINED THE FIGHT
The little girl's mother, Xu Yang (34), began arguing with Leung and the woman's 34-year-old daughter, Ng Ka-wun, after her child was slapped. The argument quickly escalated into a physical fight.
It was stated that a man who intervened during the incident shouted at Leung, "Did you just hit a child? I saw you." It was reported that Ng confronted Xu with an umbrella in her hand and said, "You can't leave here."
Meanwhile, it was reported that another video that emerged alleged Xu slapped Leung before the little girl was slapped. As part of the investigation, police also initially focused on the possibility that the little girl's mother may have hit Leung first.
20-DAY PRISON SENTENCE IMPOSED
After the incident, proceedings were initiated against Leung, her daughter Ng, and the little girl's mother, Xu, on charges of fighting in a public place. Leung was also tried on a charge of assault against the little girl.
In the case heard at Kwun Tong Court, Judge Li Chi-ho emphasized that the 68-year-old woman should not have taken her anger out on a small child. The court sentenced Leung to 20 days in prison and a fine of 2,000 Hong Kong dollars.
The other two women involved in the fight were placed under a one-year obligation to keep the peace. It was decided that each of them would have to pay 1,000 Hong Kong dollars if they were involved in another similar incident during this period.
SWELLING FORMED ON THE LITTLE GIRL'S CHEEK
A medical examination found swelling on the 5-year-old girl's cheek. It was reported that the little girl's mother and Leung's daughter had minor injuries on their faces, while Leung had small scratches on her arm.
Meanwhile, it was learned that after the incident, Leung's daughter Ng was suspended from her position by the insurance company AIA where she works. The company issued a statement saying it does not tolerate any form of violence.
