Stating that they decided together with his wife to give this name to their third child, Akyüz said, "We thought we could only make our voice heard in this way. There is nothing else we can do."

Akyüz, stating that he was deeply saddened by the events in Palestine, said that with the decision he and his wife made, they named their child Palestine.

Akyüz stated that they could not remain silent about the suffering of the Palestinian people and said, "I named my third child Palestine. Our conscience did not allow the oppression Israel and America are inflicting on Palestine. My wife and I thought that this was the only way we could make our voice heard on behalf of our family. There is nothing else we can do. Therefore, we named our child Palestine. I wholeheartedly support this cause. I want Israel and America to put an end to this oppression now."
"IT IS NOT A SITUATION MY CONSCIENCE CAN ACCEPT"
Emphasizing that naming his child Palestine was a message of support and reaction, Akyüz said, "I want to stand with Palestine. As a reaction to this, I left my child's name as Palestine. The oppression in Palestine and the loss of so many children's and families' lives is not a situation my conscience can accept. Since this is all I can do, I named my child Palestine."
