In the Çorlu district of Tekirdağ, Şaban Tezel, who underwent tests to donate a kidney to his son Şafak Tezel, who is being treated for kidney failure, learned that he has lung cancer. While treatment for Şaban Tezel began after an early diagnosis, his son Şafak Tezel underwent a kidney transplant at the Organ Transplant Center.

Şafak Tezel, a resident of Çorlu district in Tekirdağ, was diagnosed with diabetes 20 years ago. Five years ago, damage occurred in Tezel's kidneys. As his disease progressed, Tezel applied to the Organ Transplant Center of ÇOMÜ Hospital a year ago due to end-stage renal failure.

Shafak Tezel, who is waiting for a kidney transplant, had his father, Şaban Tezel, willing to donate his kidney. Last week, tissue compatibility tests revealed that Şaban Tezel had lung cancer. Therefore, the organ transplant did not take place. Şaban Tezel was hospitalized for treatment at ÇOMÜ Hospital. Early diagnosis was made, and Tezel's treatment was started immediately.

HIS SON ALSO RECOVERED

His son, Şaban Tezel, regained his health after a successful operation to transplant a kidney donated by the family of a deceased person in Bursa.

"THE TRANSPLANT PROCEDURE WAS PERFORMED AND HE RECOVERED"

After the surgery, Şafak Tezel, who was about to be discharged, was examined at the hospital by Prof. Dr. Cabir Alan and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anıl Kurt, who stated that the patient's health condition was good. Prof. Dr. Cabir Alan, the Director of the Organ Transplant Center at ÇOMÜ, pointed out that Şafak Tezel was diagnosed with diabetes 20 years ago, saying, "Dialysis is a process that affects social and daily life. During this time, initially, his wife wanted to donate her kidney. Compatibility tests were conducted for her. Unfortunately, the process could not proceed due to tissue incompatibility. This time, his father volunteered to donate an organ. However, although the tissue tests were compatible, a mass was detected in the lung during the tests. When further examinations revealed that the mass was lung cancer, the process was halted. Our patient started dialysis. During this time, he applied to our center for a transplant. And when the first organ donation had a positive tissue compatibility, the transplant procedure was performed for Mr. Şafak, and he regained his health," he said.

"A DOUBLE HAPPINESS HAS OCCURRED IN THE FAMILY"

Prof. Dr. Alan continued: "Here, there are actually mixed situations where there is disappointment on one side, joy on the other, and mourning on another. If his father had not agreed to be a donor, the tests would not have been conducted, and he would likely have progressed further with lung cancer and would have lost his life. With this process, both his father's life was saved, and thanks to the organ donation, Mr. Şafak regained his health. A double happiness has occurred in a family," he said.

"WHEN I LEARNED MY FATHER HAD CANCER, I HAD NO HOPE LEFT"

Şafak Tezel, who stated that they applied for a kidney transplant last year, said, "This year we had our surgery. My health condition is very good right now. I was able to get up and was about to be discharged within 10 days. I invite everyone to donate organs. Donating means saving lives. My father was going to give me his kidney. When we did the tests, it turned out my father had lung cancer. When I learned my father had cancer, I had no hope left. However, when the news came that another suitable donor was found, my transplant was performed. Right now, both my father and I are in good health," he said.
