BYD, one of China's largest electric vehicle manufacturers, has begun evaluating new factory options to expand its production capacity in Europe. While the $1 billion factory agreement planned in Manisa, Turkey remains on the agenda, the company's latest move has drawn attention.

Stella Li, BYD's Executive Vice President of International Operations, made significant statements regarding the company's European factory plans at the Financial Times Future of the Car conference held in London.

NEGOTIATION TABLE WITH STELLANTIS

According to Bloomberg News, Stella Li stated that BYD is in contact not only with Stellantis but also with other European manufacturers.

Li said, \"We are not only talking to Stellantis but also to other companies. We are evaluating every existing facility in Europe because we want to utilize this idle capacity.\"

Li noted that Italy stands out on the company's shortlist, while France is an attractive long-term option due to its low electricity costs.

\"WE WANT TO OPERATE FACILITIES OURSELVES\"

Stella Li stated that BYD prefers to operate factories directly under its own umbrella rather than through joint ventures, describing it as \"easier.\"

Li also mentioned that they are examining production facilities of established brands going through tough times, such as Maserati. When asked about the Cassino factory in central Italy, she responded, \"We have visited many facilities in Europe.\"

Li said the company has not yet made a final decision, adding, \"We are continuing to review, but we have not taken any concrete steps yet.\"

EUROPEAN SALES RAPIDLY INCREASING

It is noted that BYD, which has accelerated its overseas investments due to intense price competition in China, is particularly focused on growth in the European market.

While it is stated that rising fuel prices following conflicts in the Middle East have revived demand for electric vehicles, BYD's European sales are also experiencing rapid growth.

Meanwhile, it was announced that Stellantis recently decided to expand its collaboration with Chinese Leapmotor and allocated two of its factories in Spain for electric vehicle production.
