The historic meeting between US President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping has begun. Speaking before the meeting, Trump said, 'We will have a great future with China, Mr. President, you are a great leader.' Chinese President Xi Jinping stated, 'We should be partners, not rivals.'
US President Donald Trump made a historic visit to China after a gap of 8.5 years. Trump was officially welcomed by Chinese President Xi Jinping in front of the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Speaking before the meeting, Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted the global transformation taking place, saying, "Today, a transformation unseen in a century is accelerating on a global scale. The international situation is undergoing volatile and turbulent changes. The world has come to a new crossroads."
Regarding the future of China-US relations, Xi Jinping stated the following:
"Can China and the United States overcome the Thucydides Trap to create a new paradigm for major power relations? Can we jointly tackle global challenges and provide greater stability for the world? For the well-being of our two peoples and the future of humanity, can we together build a brighter future for our bilateral relations?"
Noting that these questions are critical from a historical perspective, Xi said, "These are questions of vital importance to history, the world, and the people. They are the questions of our time that you and I, as leaders of major countries, must answer."
"WE SUFFER FROM CONFLICT"
Xi Jinping emphasized that the two countries must act in cooperation, saying, "I have always believed that our countries' common interests far outweigh our differences. One's success is an opportunity for the other, and a stable bilateral relationship benefits the world."
Continuing his remarks, Xi said, "China and the United States benefit from cooperation and suffer from conflict. We should be partners, not rivals. We should help each other succeed and achieve shared prosperity, and find the right way for major countries to get along in the new era."
TRUMP PRAISES XI
US President Donald Trump expressed that he was greatly impressed by the ceremony, saying, "First of all, this was a great honor that few people get to witness. I must particularly note that I was very moved by those children. They were happy. They were beautiful."
Trump made striking remarks about Xi Jinping:
"You are a great leader. I tell everyone, you are a great leader. Sometimes people don't like me saying it, but I still say it because it is a fact. I only tell the truth."
"I HAVE GREAT RESPECT FOR CHINA"
Trump delivered positive messages regarding relations with China, stating, "Together, we will have a tremendous future. I have great respect for China and the work you do."
Speaking about economic relations, Trump said, "We asked the world's 30 largest companies. Each one said 'yes,' and I demanded only the top names, not the number two or three names of the companies. They are here today to pay their respects to you and China; they look forward to trade and cooperation."
Trump also added, "This process will be entirely based on reciprocity from our side as well."
