Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced increased penalties for motorcycle riders at the Motobike Istanbul 2025 Fair. The fine for not wearing a helmet will start at 1,500 TL and can go up to 9,000 TL. Additionally, a penalty of 47,000 TL will be imposed for acrobatic maneuvers and racing, and fines for violations such as running a red light and failing to obey a stop signal will also be increased.
The Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, who participated in the Motobike Istanbul 2025 Fair held in Istanbul, announced important regulations concerning motorcycle riders. Minister Yerlikaya stated that they are working on new regulations aimed at increasing traffic safety, which foresee an increase in penalties related to road safety and rule violations for motorcycle riders.
With the new regulation, the penalty for not wearing a helmet for motorcycle riders will show a significant increase. The current fine of 993 TL will be applied as 1500 TL for both the rider and, if applicable, the passenger (the pillion) in case of the first detection. If the same violation is repeated within a year, the fine will rise to 3000 TL. In the case of a third violation, the fine will be 9000 TL.
HEAVY PENALTY FOR ACROBATICS IN TRAFFIC
High penalties will also be imposed for dangerous behaviors such as performing acrobatic movements in flowing traffic and entering races. In case such violations are detected, riders will be fined 47,000 TL. Additionally, riders detected performing acrobatic movements will have their driving licenses confiscated for 60 days, while those participating in races will have their licenses confiscated for 2 years.
The penalty for riding a motorcycle without a driver's license is currently set at 18,677 TL, and this penalty will continue without change. In the case of individuals whose driver's licenses are temporarily revoked or canceled, the fine will be 186,000 TL if they drive a vehicle.
RED LIGHT VIOLATIONS WILL RESULT IN EYE EXAMINATIONS
The penalty for running a red light has been set at 5,000 TL. In the case of repeated violations within a year, the fine will increase by 5,000 TL each time. In the case of a third violation, the driver's license will also be confiscated along with the monetary fine. The confiscation period will be 30 days for the third violation, 60 days for the fourth, and 90 days for the fifth. Additionally, drivers who violate red lights will be sent for an eye examination. Drivers who violate for the sixth time within a year will lose their driver's license.
The penalty for motorcycle riders who do not comply with the stop order will also be increased to 47,000 TL. Additionally, the driver's license and vehicle will be confiscated for 60 days. At the end of this period, drivers will be required to undergo a psycho-technical examination and a psychiatric evaluation.
The draft prepared is expected to become law after being approved by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM).
