As in the rest of the world, a 'plant disease' has been identified in potatoes, which are among the most consumed food items in Turkey.
"ALL ARE BEING DESTROYED"
The destruction of potatoes that were returned after being exported to Tunisia continues in Mersin. Mersin Agricultural Quarantine Director Şeref Kabaoğlu made a statement to the press at the TURYAM Recovery and Disposal Facility in the Tarsus district, where the destruction process is being carried out. Kabaoğlu stated that a plant disease was detected in the potatoes and said: "Upon the application made to our Directorate on December 24, 2024, for 2,500 tons of table potatoes returned after being exported to Tunisia, samples were taken and control and analysis processes were initiated by inspectors (control officers) assigned to our institution at Taşucu Port. As a result of the control and analysis processes, it was evaluated on January 8 that the product was not suitable, and it was decided to destroy it."
"400 TONS OF POTATOES DESTROYED"
Kabaoğlu stated that the destruction of the products began on January 10, saying, "So far, 400 tons of potatoes have been destroyed at this facility. The returned products are brought to the disposal facility under complete customs control. It is not possible for them to be released into the market in any way. All products are destroyed here," he said.
MINISTER YUMAKLI HAD STATED
Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumaklı, during his visit to the National Food Reference Laboratory affiliated with the Ministry on January 9, stated regarding the return of the potatoes, "The potatoes exported to Tunisia are being returned not due to any pesticide residue or other reasons, but because of the specific disease identified in the plant itself. As with others, we will not have any tolerance in this case. We will destroy the identified products."
