Traffic congestion reached its peak on Istanbul's main entry arteries as citizens, who spent the nine-day Eid al-Adha holiday in their hometowns or vacation resorts, simultaneously began their return.
On the last day of the long holiday, tens of thousands of holidaymakers wanting to return to the megacity Istanbul hit the roads simultaneously. Drivers trying to enter Istanbul from outside the city are facing heavy traffic queues on two major arteries, from both the Thrace and Anatolian directions.
INCHING FORWARD ON THE TEKİRDAĞ AND İZMİT ROUTES
Due to vehicles returning from holiday regions, traffic has come to a standstill at times, especially on the Tekirdağ-Istanbul highway and the İzmit motorway line providing access from the Anatolian direction. Drivers approaching the Istanbul border are forced to move bumper to bumper, while authorities expect the congestion to continue until the late hours of the night.
TEAMS ON ALERT
Traffic teams have intensified their inspections at key points to prevent disruptions in transportation and potential accidents, warning drivers to maintain their following distance.
