The results of the midterm elections in the US have brought about debates in Iranian public opinion regarding the future policies of the Washington administration. While the Democrats' gaining a majority in Congress is regarded by some Iranians as a balancing factor against the Trump administration, others are of the view that the US President will maintain his tough stance toward Tehran. In interpretations in Iran regarding the election results, concerns about the possibility of a new military attack also came to the fore.
The Democrats' winning a majority in both chambers of Congress in the US midterm elections raised expectations in Iran that a change could occur in the Washington administration's policy toward Tehran. However, some Iranians voiced the view that Donald Trump could take military action against Iran despite the new balance in Congress.
TEHRAN ALSO FOLLOWED THE ELECTIONS CLOSELY
The US midterm election results were closely followed not only in Washington but also in Tehran. Unofficial results showing that the Democrats won a majority in the Senate and the House of Representatives led to differing assessments in Iran regarding the future of the US's policies toward Tehran. While some welcomed the Democrats' victory, others stated that they did not expect a change in Trump's attitude toward Iran.
FEAR OF A NEW ATTACK ON IRAN
Mehriyeh Kabiri, sharing her views in Tehran, stated that she did not think the election results would create a significant change in the US's policy toward Iran. Arguing that Trump could make his decisions independently of the political balance in Congress, Kabiri expressed concern about the possibility of a new conflict.
Kabiri stated that neither Iran nor the US had won in the process and said the two countries were in uncertainty. Expressing that she thought the US could attack again, Kabiri noted that the Democrats' winning a majority in Congress would not eliminate this possibility.
"THE DEMOCRATS' WINNING IS SATISFYING"
Mohammad Heddadi, a taxi driver in Tehran, stated that he welcomed the Democrats' election success. Arguing that the Democrats pursue more moderate policies compared with the Republicans, Heddadi said Trump and the Republicans displayed a harsher approach.
Heddadi, stating that if the US partially accepted Iran's demands, the Tehran administration could also take reciprocal steps, claimed that his country was not pro-war and was defending itself.
HE THINKS TRUMP'S ATTITUDE WILL NOT CHANGE
Amir Hossein Jafari, studying at Amir Kabir University, also stated that the Iranian administration regarded the US as an enemy without distinguishing between Democrats and Republicans.
Jafari argued that Trump might not be affected by the new political balances formed in Congress and assessed that the US President could maintain his harsh attitude toward Iran. He expressed that he thought the Democrats' attempts to restrict war powers could also be blocked by Trump.
