16 students died and 79 were injured in a fire that broke out at night at a girls' boarding school in Nakuru, Kenya.

A fire in a boarding girls' school in northwestern Kenya has killed 16 students and injured 79 others.

16 STUDENTS LOSE THEIR LIVES IN BOARDING SCHOOL FIRE

Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Samuel Ndanyi reported in a written statement that a fire broke out at a boarding school in Nakuru city during the night.

Education Minister Julius Ogamba stated that there were 808 female students at the school during the fire, adding, "Of these, 79 were injured. 71 of the injured have been treated and discharged, while 7 are still receiving treatment in the hospital. We currently have 16 fatalities."

INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen noted that the investigation into the fire is ongoing and urged the public to refrain from speculating about the cause of the fire until the investigation results are announced.

Nakuru, located approximately 160 kilometers northwest of Kenya's capital Nairobi, is regarded as one of the country's major urban centers.
