The cyber attack scandal targeting Germany's top state officials is escalating. It has been revealed that in the attacks carried out via the secure messaging app Signal, the accounts of Parliamentary President Julia Klöckner, as well as Education Minister Karin Prien and Housing Minister Verena Hubertz, were compromised. As the scope of the leaked communications expands, the possibility that the attackers may have also accessed conversations with Chancellor Friedrich Merz has pushed the scandal to an even more critical level.

SPEAKER OF PARLIAMENT AT THE CENTER OF THE SCANDAL
The chain of cyberattacks came to light with the breach of German Federal Parliament Speaker Julia Klöckner's Signal account. According to reports in the German press, unauthorized access was gained to Klöckner's account, allowing her private correspondence to be read.
It has been suggested that, with this access, Klöckner's conversations with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz may also have been seen by hackers.
MINISTERS ALSO TARGETED
As the investigation deepened, the attack's broad scope became apparent. It was determined that the Signal accounts of Education, Family, Seniors, Women, and Youth Minister Karin Prien, as well as Housing, Urban Development, and Housing Minister Verena Hubertz, were also compromised.
It was reported that private and classified correspondence of both ministers was accessed by the attackers.
THE SCOPE OF THE ATTACK EXPANDS
Officials stated that the attack was not limited to government members. According to initial findings:
Numerous members of the German Federal Parliament, personnel working within NATO, diplomats, businesspeople, and journalists were targets of the same cyberattack.

INVESTIGATION UNDER SUSPICION OF ESPIONAGE
Following the cyberattack targeting politicians, diplomats, businesspeople, and journalists in Germany, the German Federal Prosecutor's Office announced that a comprehensive investigation is being conducted into the matter. The Federal Prosecutor's Office stated that the investigation is being carried out under charges of espionage activities.
The scandal has brought the issue of digital security back to the forefront in Germany and across Europe, due to the fact that even the Signal app, known as a secure communication tool, could be targeted.
