In Italy, prosecutors have launched an investigation against the retail giant Amazon for allegedly evading taxes amounting to 1.2 billion euros (1.3 billion USD).
According to a report by the Italian media citing the Milan Prosecutor's Office, Amazon is accused of underpaying value-added tax in Italy during a three-year period that lasted until 2021. The report states that if the allegations are confirmed, Amazon may have to pay up to 3 billion euros, including penalties and interest.
According to the report, due to the investigation, Amazon may be required to add value-added tax to sales of goods produced outside the European Union in Italy, which could affect the company's business model. Amazon has previously faced scrutiny from Italian tax authorities. In 2017, the company agreed to pay 100 million euros to resolve tax disputes related to the period from 2011 to 2015.
