A woman who ordered products more than 2,100 times on the online shopping site of a manga publishing company in Japan and then canceled these orders has been arrested on charges of "fraudulent obstruction of a business."
According to a statement from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, an indictment was prepared against Mayu Yoshida, a restaurant worker, on the charge of "fraudulently obstructing a business."
CANCELED REPEATEDLY WITHOUT PAYING
The indictment alleged that Yoshida ordered "One Piece" and "Naruto" manga products more than 2,100 times between July 2024 and May 2025 on the online shopping site of manga publisher Shueisha Inc. and canceled them repeatedly without making payments.
Yoshida was accused of using 238 different accounts to place the orders, allowing them to be automatically canceled by waiting until the final payment deadline, and refusing to accept packages after selecting the cash-on-delivery option.
ORDER CANCELLATIONS WORTH 27.2 MILLION DOLLARS
It was noted in the national press that the total value of the products ordered and then canceled exceeded 4.3 billion yen (27.2 million dollars).
Yoshida, 32, admitted the charges in her statement to the police. Stating that her actions stemmed from "stress accumulated in her daily life," Yoshida said, "I generally love anime. Ordering products gave me a sense of satisfying my desires."
THE COMPANY'S LOSS IS LARGE
Shueisha Inc. stated in a statement that it suffered a significant financial loss, including temporary stock shortages, loss of sales opportunities, and disruption of payments to delivery companies.
