In Northern Cyprus, babies were given pure alcohol instead of water: 1 baby died.

It was determined that pure alcohol was accidentally added to the baby formula instead of water in the neonatal intensive care unit of a state hospital in the TRNC. Due to this scandalous mistake, a 20-day-old baby lost its life, while 6 babies were taken under treatment. It was reported that 4 healthcare personnel are also in custody.

1 BABY DIED DUE TO PURE ALCOHOL

In the neonatal intensive care unit of Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital located in the capital of the TRNC, Nicosia, pure alcohol was accidentally added to the baby formula instead of water. The TRNC Ministry of Health reported that 7 babies became ill, and a 20-day-old baby who was being treated in an incubator due to premature birth lost its life, while 6 babies were taken under treatment. An investigation has been launched regarding the incident, and 4 healthcare workers were taken into custody on charges of "causing death due to negligence and carelessness." The family who lost their baby stated that their baby passed away last Friday, but they were informed late.

"WE INFORMED LATE BECAUSE THE POLICE WARNED US"

TRNC Minister of Health Hakan Dinçyürek stated, "There are 7 babies affected by this incident, one of whom has died." Addressing the families regarding why they were informed late about the incident, Dinçyürek said, "We were warned by the police." Dinçyürek added, "I am also a father, I understand what kind of psychology you are in. My condolences. The information regarding the issue reached us yesterday afternoon. We called all responsible doctors and all neonatal specialists on the island here and started the investigations."

FAMILIES FAINTED

Dinçyürek stated that they reached the test results after midnight, saying, "Patient health is our priority. Since the incident has a judicial aspect, the investigation is ongoing. Therefore, we provided late information to you and the press. The police stated that they could not take precautions, which delayed our announcement. The last interventions and evaluations were noted. Soon, families will be allowed back in to be informed about the condition of the babies. We were warned by the police," he said.

Families reacted to Minister Dinçyürek, saying, "Are you only making announcements after the children have died?" Some families fainted after the minister's statement.
