A three-day national mourning period has been declared following the incident in N'Zerekore, Guinea, where 56 people lost their lives in a stampede.

3-DAY MOURNING DECLARED

In a statement from the government, it was announced that a 3-day mourning period has been declared in memory of the 56 people who lost their lives in the stampede that occurred during the General Mamadi Doumbouya football tournament held in the city of N'Zerekore, approximately 850 kilometers away from Conakry. A delegation led by Prime Minister Bah Oury also went to N'Zerekore for inspections.

WHAT HAPPENED?

During the match between the teams of N'Zerekore and Labe on Sunday, incidents broke out in the stadium after the referee awarded a penalty to the home team. The police used tear gas to stop Labe fans who attacked the referee, and the fans responded by throwing stones at the police. In the ensuing stampede, 56 people, including children, lost their lives, and hundreds were injured.
