Jamie Raskin, a member of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, has launched an investigation into FIFA over allegations of "Trump-linked corruption."
Jamie Raskin, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee, announced that he has launched an investigation into FIFA over allegations of a "quid pro quo" relationship between FIFA and the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.
INVESTIGATION INTO FIFA
In a letter to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Raskin stated that the investigation covers alleged attempts by FIFA to obtain special privileges from the Trump administration and claims that the Trump administration in return dropped high-profile corruption cases linked to FIFA.
Raskin argued that U.S. consumers have been harmed by FIFA's "excessive pricing" and "deceptive sales methods" for World Cup tickets, and suggested that steps such as FIFA leasing an office in Trump Tower and awarding Trump the "FIFA Peace Award" were part of an effort to establish a close relationship with the Trump administration. Raskin claimed that in return, the Department of Justice dropped FIFA-related corruption cases that had previously resulted in convictions.
Raskin, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, also requested that Infantino provide the Committee with documents regarding potential benefits provided to Trump and his circle, FIFA's ticket sales practices, contacts with U.S. officials, and visitor logs for the FIFA office in Trump Tower, while also demanding that Infantino testify before the Committee.
