DENSE SMOKE MADE PROGRESSING IN THE METRO TUNNEL DIFFICULT
A fire panic occurred yesterday on the metro line in Barcelona, the capital of Spain's autonomous region of Catalonia. The fire in the electrical system of the line filled the metro carriages with smoke. Passengers opened the emergency exit doors on their own, got onto the tracks, and walked through the tunnel to reach the platform. Of the approximately 200 meters walked by passengers, 39 were taken to hospitals. The Emergency Medical System (SEM) teams reported that 129 passengers in the metro were slightly injured.
Some passengers stated that due to the dense smoke, they could not see anything and had to use the light from their mobile phones to progress through the metro tunnel.
SERVICES RETURNED TO NORMAL
Fire brigade technical chief Sebastia Massaguer announced that the fire was extinguished and the tunnel was ventilated.
In a statement made today by the Barcelona Public Transport Authority (TMB), it was reported that services returned to normal as of early morning hours. It was stated that the investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
