The reformist Tebriz MP and former Minister of Health, Masoud Pezeshkian, became the 9th President of the country by receiving 53.7% of the votes in the second round of the 14th term presidential election in Iran. VOTE COUNTING PROCESS COMPLETEDMohsen Eslami, the spokesperson for the Election Center of the Ministry of Interior in Iran, announced that the vote counting process for the second round of the presidential election, which took place yesterday, has been completed, during a press conference held at the ministry building. 30 MILLION VOTERS WENT TO THE POLLSEslami stated that a total of 30,530,157 votes were cast in the ballot boxes set up in approximately 59,000 centers across the country. He said that Pezeshkian received 16,384,403 votes. Accordingly, Pezeshkian's vote percentage was 53.7%. CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE REMAINED AT 44%Eslami stated that the conservative candidate, Saeed Jalili, received 13,538,179 votes. Jalili's vote percentage remained at 44.4%. The voter turnout for the second round of the presidential election was 49.8%. WHO IS MASOUD PEZESHKIAN?Masoud Pezeshkian was born on September 29, 1954, in the city of Mahabad, to an Iranian Turkish family. Pezeshkian, which means "Doctors" in Persian, graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Tabriz University. He served as both a combatant and a doctor during the Iran-Iraq war, which took place between 1980 and 1988. After completing his internship course in 1985, Pezeshkian continued his education by specializing in general surgery at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences after the war. Pezeshkian received his subspecialty in cardiac surgery from the University of Medical Sciences in Iran in 1993, and later became a cardiac surgeon. He served as the Rector of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences between 1994 and 1999. POLITICAL CAREERPezeshkian's political career began when he was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Health during the presidency of Mohammad Khatami in 1997. He was appointed as the Minister of Health in 2001 and held this position until 2005. In the General Elections held in the country in 2008, Pezeshkian managed to enter the Parliament as a Tebriz MP and has been serving as the representative of Tebriz for five terms since then. In 2016, Pezeshkian served as the Deputy Speaker of the Iranian Parliament for 4 years. He applied for candidacy in the presidential elections in 2013 but withdrew later. His candidacy for the 2021 elections was rejected by the Guardian Council. Pezeshkian succeeded in entering the Parliament as the first candidate from Tebriz in the Parliamentary Elections held on March 1. After the death of President Ebrahim Raisi, the presidential election, which was scheduled to be held in 2025, was brought forward by 1 year. Pezeshkian applied for candidacy and competed as the sole candidate of the reformists in the elections.
