In the process that began with Iran claiming to have struck a US warship in the Strait of Hormuz, the US denied the allegation. Subsequently, Iranian media released footage purportedly showing the moment of the explosion.
Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have been very high in the last 24 hours. Fars News Agency, close to Iran's Revolutionary Guards, claimed that a US Navy warship attempted to enter the strait and was targeted with two missiles after ignoring a "stop" warning. According to Reuters, Iran stated that the ship was stopped off the coast of Jask and was not allowed to enter the strait. The ship could not continue its course after the attack and was forced to turn back.
CENTCOM DENIED THE ALLEGATIONS
Following the allegations, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) issued a statement. CENTCOM denied reports from Iranian sources that a "US warship was hit," announcing that no US naval element was targeted. The statement said that US forces continue their "Project Freedom" mission in the Strait of Hormuz. A US official speaking to the Jerusalem Post also said that Iran's claim of a missile hit was not true.
FOOTAGE WAS RELEASED
Iranian media released footage allegedly showing the said attack. In the video, underwater explosions are seen near what appears to be a warship sailing at sea, with water columns forming around the ship after the explosions. It was noted that no flag or distinguishing mark was clearly visible on the ship in the images.
Iran did not share information about when the footage was recorded. Therefore, the connection of the video to the latest developments in the Strait of Hormuz has not been confirmed by independent sources.
