It has been claimed that the US is considering inviting Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 Summit to be held in Miami. If Putin attends, it would be the first time he has participated in a summit at the leader level since 2019. Trump stated that he would not oppose the invitation.
The US administration is reportedly considering inviting Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 Leaders Summit planned for December in Miami, Florida.
EYES ON THE MIAMI SUMMIT
An unnamed US official speaking to the Washington Post claimed that inviting Putin to the summit scheduled for December 14-15 is on the agenda. The official stated that formal invitations have not yet been sent.
“G20 MEMBER, WILL BE INVITED”
The same official noted that Russia is a G20 member, expressing the expectation that Moscow will be invited to both ministerial-level meetings and the leaders' summit.
TRUMP'S STATEMENT
US President Donald Trump said in a statement at the White House that he was not aware of a potential invitation to Putin. However, Trump stated he would not oppose such an invitation, saying, "I think everyone needs to talk to everyone."
PUTIN HAS NOT ATTENDED LEADERS SUMMITS FOR YEARS
Russian President Vladimir Putin last attended a G20 leaders summit in person in 2019 in Osaka, Japan. In subsequent years, Putin either joined summits online or sent representatives, and has not participated in leader-level meetings since 2021.
PARTICIPATION COULD SPARK DEBATE
While Putin's attendance at the summit is assessed as potentially causing controversy in international public opinion, the invitation claim is being closely monitored in diplomatic circles.
