Israel announced the appointment of an ambassador to the region after recognizing Somaliland as an independent country. Michael Lotem will be the first ambassador to Somaliland.

According to a report by Israeli state television KAN, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs approved the appointment of Michael Lotem as ambassador to the Somaliland region.

AMBASSADOR FROM ISRAEL TO SOMALILAND

Israel recognized Somaliland as a "country" on December 26th. Somaliland unilaterally declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but is not recognized as an independent state by the international community.

It is reported that Lotem, who previously represented Israel as ambassador in Kenya, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan, will not initially reside in Somaliland.

ISRAEL IS THE FIRST COUNTRY TO RECOGNIZE SOMALILAND

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that they recognize the Somaliland region as an "independent and sovereign state".

With this decision, Israel became the only country to recognize Somaliland.

Somaliland unilaterally declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not been recognized as an independent state by the international community.

Somalia, on the other hand, views Somaliland as an inseparable part of the country and emphasizes that all international agreements concerning the region fall solely under the authority of the Mogadishu administration.
