WHAT IS THE IRON DOME AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Iron Dome (in English: Iron Dome) is a mobile air defense system developed by Israel. It was first actively used in 2011. The system's purpose is to detect and destroy short-range rockets, mortars, artillery shells, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the air. It is particularly used against rockets launched at Israeli territory by groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.

The Iron Dome was developed by the Israeli Ministry of Defense in collaboration with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries. The United States has also contributed to the development and funding processes.

The Iron Dome consists of three main components:

Radar Unit (EL/M-2084)

It is referred to as an advanced multi-mission radar. It detects incoming threats (rockets, UAVs, mortar shells) early and collects information on speed, direction, and range.

Control and Command Center (BMC - Battle Management and Control)

It analyzes the target detected by the radar. It predicts where the target will land (it may not intervene if it is not in a populated area). If necessary, it issues a destruction command.

Launch Battery and Tamir Interceptor Missiles

They are sent by locking onto the target. They explode at close range before making contact with the target, destroying the enemy in the air. Generally, each battery carries about 20 missiles.

FEATURES

Very fast: It identifies and intervenes with the target within a few seconds.

Selective: It does not hit every target; it does not destroy rockets that are understood to fall outside populated areas to avoid waste.

High success rate: According to Israeli sources, it has a destruction success rate ranging from 85-90% (independent sources may find this rate lower).

Mobile: It can be transported by vehicles and deployed quickly.

COST AND CRITICISMS

Each Tamir missile costs approximately $50,000.

The cost of the rockets it faces is mostly a few hundred dollars, which is why its economic sustainability is often criticized.

However, because it prevents human casualties and infrastructure damage, this cost is seen as "acceptable."

THE U.S. IS ALSO INTERESTED

Besides Israel, the U.S. military has also shown interest in the system and has tested some prototypes.

It has had a revolutionary impact on war strategies; reducing civilian casualties has provided advantages in military and diplomatic fields.
