The Democrats' victory in the US midterm elections reflects anti-war public opinion and economic concerns. The European press emphasizes that the results are an important message to Trump's Iran policy.
After the midterm elections in the US, striking comments in the Israeli and European press: Americans said no to war
The heavy defeat of the Republicans in the midterm elections held in the US was assessed in the Israeli and European press through the Iran war. In prominent commentaries in the international media, it was stated that the election results reflected anti-war reaction in American public opinion and discomfort over the economic consequences of the conflict.
The Democrats' winning a majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate was interpreted as an important political message regarding President Donald Trump's Iran policy. It was assessed that especially fuel prices rising due to the war and increasing living costs were effective in the Republicans' loss of votes.
In the Israeli press, attention was also drawn to the connection between the election results and the Iran war. The Times of Israel included statements by Iran's chief negotiator and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. In a post on his social media account, Ghalibaf said, “Because of conscience or the cost of living, Americans said no to war. We support this message as well.”
In the European press, the possible effects of the elections on Washington's foreign policy were discussed. The German broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) drew attention to the fact that the Democrats' gaining power in Congress could limit Trump's Iran policy. It was stated that the Democrats could gain the opportunity to monitor the financing of the war and the administration's military decisions more closely.
However, it is also pointed out that the election results cannot be explained solely by reaction to the war. Economic difficulties, inflation and fuel prices are also cited among the main issues that influenced voters' choices.
Trump had also acknowledged that the Iran war played a role in the Republicans' election defeat. Thus, the midterm elections brought the domestic political cost of the US's Iran policy back onto the agenda.
