The AK Party plans to obtain a decision from the Parliament for President Erdoğan's candidacy. In the plan to secure a decision from the Parliament, which requires the support of 360 deputies, the support of the MHP and the DEM Party could play a critical role. AK Party sources state that it is still early for discussions about the candidacy, indicating that the debate may begin in 2027.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's statement, "I have no intention of running again," has sparked a new wave of debate in the political arena. MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli stated, "It is an undeniable historical and life reality that the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish nation need Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who outlines the roadmap for the new century," while it has been learned that the AK Party has accelerated its preparations for Erdoğan's candidacy.
IT IS CONSIDERED TO ISSUE A ELECTION DECISION FROM THE PARLIAMENT
According to a report in Türkiye newspaper; AK Party officials believe that it is more appropriate to issue an election decision from the Parliament instead of a constitutional amendment for Erdoğan to run for a third time. It is also emphasized that Erdoğan's statements do not mean he will not run. AK Party sources indicate that it is still early for discussions about candidacy, suggesting that these discussions could begin in 2027.
360 DEPUTIES ARE REQUIRED
To issue an election decision from the Parliament, a three-fifths majority of the total number of members (360 deputies) is required. According to the constitution, the President and the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) can take the country to elections. Accordingly, if the decision to renew the elections is made by the TBMM in 2028, Erdoğan will be able to run for the presidency again. However, if the decision to renew the elections is made by the President, Erdoğan does not have the right to run for a third time.
THE SUPPORT OF MHP AND DEM PARTY IS CRITICAL
Considering the current distribution of seats, under today's conditions, the number of deputies in the People's Alliance is not sufficient for the three-fifths majority required for the TBMM to decide on renewing elections. However, the AK Party believes that no party can avoid elections when this issue arises. Additionally, it is stated that with the success of the Terror-Free Turkey process conducted with the DEM Party, the election decision could be made with the support of this party.
2ND TERM IN THE NEW SYSTEM
Erdoğan became president for the first time in the elections held by popular vote in 2014. In 2017, the Presidential Government System was adopted. He was elected president in the elections held on June 24, 2018, and May 28, 2023. Thus, according to the constitution, Erdoğan will complete his two-term tenure in 2028.
