Halis Aydın, a prayer bead master living in the Oltu district of Erzurum, has been crafting Oltu stone prayer beads with great patience and skill for 45 years. Aydın stated that he produces an average of 5 to 7 prayer beads per day, and the prices of his handmade products range from 2,000 to 6,000 lira.
Halis Aydın, a 63-year-old resident of Yasin Haşimoğlu Neighborhood in Oltu district of Erzurum, has been passionately continuing the craftsmanship of making prayer beads, which he learned from his family elders after completing his primary education. Aydın, who has been making Oltu stone prayer beads for about 45 years, keeps his profession alive in a mini workshop he set up in his garden.
HE PRODUCES A MAXIMUM OF 7 PRAYER BEADS A DAY
Starting his work early in the morning, Aydın produces an average of 5 to 7 prayer beads a day by working until the evening call to prayer. The handmade prayer beads crafted by his skilled hands are highly appreciated by the citizens.
PRICES CAN GO UP TO 6 THOUSAND TL
Stating that he generally produces on order, Aydın expressed that the prices of prayer beads start from 2 thousand TL and can go up to 6 thousand TL, depending on their size and craftsmanship. Master Aydın, who prefers to make his prayer beads simply, mentioned that excessive processing diminishes the natural value of Oltu stone.
Halis Aydın, who continues to keep the craftsmanship of Oltu stone prayer beads alive, also added that he wants to pass on his profession to future generations.
