Avocado, which started to be grown as a hobby in the gardens of houses in Antalya’s Alanya district years ago, is opening to foreign markets as a geographically indicated product. The first products of Alanya avocado, whose harvest season has begun, were sent to Georgia. Ali Hüddoğlu, President of the Alanya Tropical Fruit Producers Association, noted that exports made on a pallet basis have shifted to truckloads this year, and said they expect production of more than 150 million units in the region this year.
The harvest season has begun for the geographically indicated avocado in Alanya. With promotional efforts and demand from foreign markets, the product's export potential is increasing.
APPLICATION MADE FOR EU REGISTRATION
This year, an application was made for European Union (EU) registration for the Alanya avocado, which was registered with a geographical indication by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office in 2018. The export potential of the product, which stands out especially with its “Fuerte” variety, is increasing with promotional efforts, the spread of international good agricultural practices in production, and demand from foreign markets. Alanya’s geographical location and proximity to export markets also provide an advantage in delivering the product to foreign markets.
FIRST PRODUCTS SENT TO GEORGIA
Ali Hüddoğlu, President of the Alanya Tropical Fruit Producers Association, said in a statement to an Anadolu Agency (AA) reporter that the Alanya avocado is not only an agricultural product but also a value identified with the district and representing the region. Noting that the product has begun to attract the interest of international traders, Hüddoğlu stated that the first products harvested this year were sent to Georgia.
EXPORT JOURNEY FROM PALLETS TO TRUCKS
Emphasizing that shipments previously made in limited quantities and on pallets are now carried out by truckload, Hüddoğlu said, “We have fully begun exporting our Alanya-type avocado abroad this year. It is an avocado identified with the city and representing Alanya. While exports abroad were previously on a pallet basis, we have now begun exporting it by truckload.”
TARGET IS ONE TRUCK PER DAY
Reporting that exports continue with one truck per week, Hüddoğlu stated that they aim for shipments to reach one truck per day in the coming years. Drawing attention to the fact that the avocado Turkey previously obtained from abroad is now offered to foreign markets as well as the domestic market through domestic production, Hüddoğlu expressed that producers welcome this development.
ON MARKET SHELVES IN 72 HOURS
Explaining that harvested avocados can reach market shelves abroad within 72 hours, Hüddoğlu stated that avocados sent from other countries can take from two weeks to two months to reach their destination. Hüddoğlu noted that the fact that products sent from Alanya are offered to the market while preserving their freshness supports demand.
Stating that interest in Alanya avocado is gradually increasing in neighboring countries, Hüddoğlu reported that domestic and foreign consumers turning to domestic production is a positive development for the sector.
150 MILLION UNITS OF PRODUCTION EXPECTED THIS YEAR
Expressing that they expect sufficient rainfall and a favorable summer season to reflect positively on yield this year, Hüddoğlu said that they foresee production of more than 150 million units and expect production to increase in the coming years as well.
10,000 PRODUCERS, 100,000 DECARES OF AREA
Reporting that approximately 10,000 producers around Alanya, Gazipaşa, and Manavgat grow avocados on 100,000 decares of land, Hüddoğlu stated that the geographically indicated Alanya avocado makes up 30-40 percent of this production. Expressing that the sector's capacity will grow even further as production areas reach productive age, Hüddoğlu added that demand from foreign markets gives producers hope for the coming years.
