The thunderstorm with heavy rain that hit Izmir caused a disaster in the city. In Menderes district, a part of the road collapsed due to the rain, and some vehicles were dragged into the sea. Meanwhile, in Seferihisar, the retaining wall of a construction site collapsed due to the flood, and dozens of vehicles fell into the resulting gap.

In the district of Menderes in Izmir, heavy rainfall caused some houses and businesses to be flooded, the road collapsed due to the overflow of the stream, and some vehicles were dragged into the sea. The thunderstorm that started in the city during the night continued to affect the area in the morning.

RETAINING WALL COLLAPSED

Due to the rainfall, some houses in Menderes Çukuraltı neighborhood and the municipal closed parking lot in Özdere neighborhood were flooded, and a retaining wall collapsed. The collapse of the wall caused damage to some parked vehicles.

ONE DAY BREAK IN EDUCATION

The debris carried by the floodwaters also caused damage in the garden of Özdere Oğan Timinci Primary School. As a precaution, education was suspended for one day at the school.

ROAD COLLAPSED, VEHICLE DRAGGED

Some vehicles were stranded in the water in the district of Menderes. Some houses in Özdere neighborhood were also flooded. Puddles around the organized industrial zone in the Torbalı district caused difficulties for drivers. In Ahmetbeyli neighborhood, a section of the road leading to Maydonoz Cove collapsed due to the overflow of the stream. Some cars parked on the road and some boats connected to the cove were dragged into the sea. The owner of the dragged car, Şadan Özdirik, said that a similar situation had occurred in the past.

Özdirik, who expressed that they were not expecting the rainfall to be this effective, said, "We were surprised. The covers on the vehicles are still intact, but the vehicles are in the water. As you can see, the road has collapsed. The municipality's teams have arrived. They said, 'We cannot remove them' because the road has collapsed. They said, 'We cannot pull them out with an excavator and hang them up.'" The Coast Guard Command and the fire brigade started working to remove the dragged car and boats from the sea.

SOME HOUSES FLOODED

Retired doctor Cevdet Yılmaz, who has been living in the neighborhood for about 12 years, also demanded that necessary precautions be taken. Yılmaz claimed that the local authorities turned a blind eye to construction in the stream bed and said, "What will happen? Nature will eventually take revenge on us. The rain started with big lightning flashes at 04.00 in the morning. I went out to go to work from my house. I got wet while taking my car from the parking lot. I changed my clothes again. Then it became impossible to go out. The water is flowing into the sea at human height. And this water brought these vehicles. It collapsed one of the walls. Many houses in the site were flooded."

A parked car was dragged into the sea. Firefighters started working to remove the vehicle. In the Halkapınar neighborhood of Konak district, vehicles had difficulty moving on the roads due to the puddles formed.

RETAINING WALL COLLAPSED IN SEFERIHISAR; BUILDING EVACUATED

The heavy rainfall that started around 02.00 in the Seferihisar district of Izmir negatively affected life in the district. Due to the flood, the retaining wall of a construction site on 95th Street in Çolak İbrahim Bey neighborhood collapsed. The residents of the building with the collapsed retaining wall were evacuated by the teams for security reasons. Özkan Özdemir, the Muhtar (neighborhood head) of Çolak İbrahim Bey neighborhood, said, "The rainfall was effective at night. In our initial examinations, we think that the retaining wall collapsed around 02.00 in the morning. We had to evacuate the adjacent buildings for now. We will work in consultation with the authorities. Get well soon to all of us."
