Magazine journalist Nurettin Soydan made statements regarding his controversy with Ece Erken on the program where he was a guest of Nur Ertürk at the Haberler.com studio. Reacting to the phrase "gossipy grandpa" directed at him, Soydan said that names who have commented on magazine programs for years should be open to criticism. Soydan also criticized Erken for posting and then deleting some of her posts, saying, "If you defend something, if you are against it, keep being against it."
Magazine journalist Nurettin Soydan was the guest of Nur Ertürk at Haberler.com studio. Soydan made assessments regarding the recent polemic with Ece Erken, as well as the boundaries of magazine journalism, social media posts, and the attitude of professional organizations.
REACTION TO THE EXPRESSION "GOSSIPY GRANDFATHER"
Soydan, who reacted to being described as a "gossipy grandfather," said he has been doing magazine journalism for years and has voiced his criticisms within the bounds of respect towards individuals.
Soydan noted that Erken was a figure who commented on people's private lives in magazine programs in the past, and therefore found it contradictory that she now reacts to criticisms directed at her.
"IF YOU DEFEND SOMETHING, IF YOU ARE AGAINST IT, KEEP BEING AGAINST IT"
Soydan also touched on posts that were written and later deleted on social media, arguing that this is a sign of inconsistency.
Soydan said, "If you defend something, if you are against it, keep being against it," adding that deleted social media posts do not completely disappear in the digital environment.
"MISTAKES ARE FOR HUMANS"
Soydan stated that people who report and comment in the magazine world can also make mistakes from time to time, and said the important thing is to realize the mistake.
Soydan expressed that they might have upset someone due to incomplete information, but in such cases, it is important to apologize face to face and correct the news when necessary.
EVALUATED THE ATTITUDE OF THE MAGAZINE JOURNALISTS ASSOCIATION
Soydan also touched upon the statement made by the Magazine Journalists Association after the polemic. He stated that the new management of the association, of which he served as president for about 10 years, should not only protect the rights of colleagues but also intervene in wrongdoings within the profession.
Soydan said he found the association's stance after the incident positive.
"MAGAZINE JOURNALISM AND SOCIAL MEDIA ARE NOT THE SAME THING"
Pointing out that magazine journalism has also changed with the development of digital media, Soydan said there is a difference between broadcasts made through social media accounts and YouTube channels and professional journalism.
Soydan said, "Evaluating that person or analyzing that news by blabbing and making a lot of word salad is not the same thing," and stated that comments made solely to create an agenda in magazine programs should be criticized.
"IT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO STAY ON THE AGENDA"
Soydan also evaluated Ece Erken's return to the agenda after the polemic, expressing the possibility that the events might have occurred as part of a plan.
Soydan said, "Sends two messages, deletes them, that draws someone's attention. Then it gets talked about. Then MYD condemns it. Friends stand by them. Connections are made. Ece gets talked about again."
"THE BEST THING IS NOT TO MENTION ECE'S NAME"
Soydan stated that the polemic should not be exaggerated further and said that not bringing Erken's name to the agenda in the future would be the most appropriate attitude.
Stating that magazine journalism is intertwined with the art world, Soydan emphasized that it is the duty of journalists to convey developments of news value to the public, but while doing so, professional rules and respect for people's private lives must be observed.
Soydan also revealed that he had not received any phone call or message from Erken after the polemic.
