The shores of Kocaeli's Kandıra district turned turquoise. Prof. Dr. Halim Aytekin Ergül from Kocaeli University said, "This seasonal excessive algae growth has no known harm. They usually decrease and disappear within a few weeks as temperatures rise further. This situation is entirely a natural and known phenomenon."

The sea on the shores of Kandıra district in Kocaeli turned turquoise due to algae bloom. Prof. Dr. Halim Aytekin Ergül stated that this situation is natural and temporary.

THE SEA TURNED TURQUOISE

The color of the sea turned turquoise along the coastal shores of Kandıra district, the city's gateway to the Black Sea. The region where turquoise meets the cliff formations called 'Kartal Kayalıkları' (Eagle Rocks) in Kerpe, one of the district's popular holiday resorts, created a scenic view.

"THIS EXCESSIVE ALGAE BLOOM HAS NO KNOWN HARMFUL EFFECTS"

Prof. Dr. Halim Aytekin Ergül, a faculty member at Kocaeli University (KOÜ) Faculty of Science and Letters, Department of Biology, stated in his statement to a Demirören News Agency reporter regarding the color change in the sea: "The color change in the sea is caused by an increase in the number of 'Coccolithophores,' a type of microscopic organism with calcium carbonate shells. The species 'Emiliania huxleyi,' which is particularly common in the Black Sea, rapidly multiplies in late spring and early summer when suitable wind and nutrient conditions occur. This seasonal excessive algae bloom has no known harmful effects. They usually decrease and disappear within a few weeks as air temperatures rise further. This situation is completely natural and known. However, if the process extends abnormally, it may affect the ecosystem balance by causing changes in water alkalinity and, especially in deep sections, a decrease in oxygen. Therefore, it needs to be monitored."
