The high altitudes of Kocaeli's Kartepe district were covered in white in the early days of May. The scenes in the district reminded of winter months.
In Kartepe, one of Kocaeli's important tourism centers, snowfall became effective in the early days of May as air temperatures suddenly dropped. The precipitation, which quickly covered the high altitudes of the district, turned the nature completely white. While the expected sunny weather of spring gave way to freezing cold, the resulting scenes rivaled the winter months.
EVERYWHERE IS COVERED WITH SNOW
On the summit line, where snow thickness reached a few centimeters in places, trees and roads were covered with snow. This situation, outside seasonal norms, surprised local residents and visitors alike. Authorities warned drivers to be careful about the risk of icing at high altitudes, while photography enthusiasts enjoyed this rare spring scenery.
In the district, where scenes rivaling winter months formed, Kartepe Municipality teams took action to prevent disruptions in transportation. Snow-fighting teams affiliated with the Directorate of Technical Affairs began road-clearing operations at critical points with construction machinery and snowplows starting from the night hours.
"BLACK ICE" WARNING
Meanwhile, along with snow-clearing operations, continuous salting activities are being carried out against the danger of black ice that may form on the roads.
Municipal authorities warned citizens, especially those living in high-altitude neighborhoods, and drivers heading towards Kartepe summit to take precautions against the risk of icing.
