King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who ascended to the throne of the traditional Tooro Kingdom in Uganda at just three years old, entered the Guinness Book of Records and was known as the 'world's youngest reigning monarch,' has passed away at the age of 34.
King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi, the leader of the traditional Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda, has died at the age of 34.
ASCENDED TO THE THRONE AT AGE THREE
The death of King Oyo, who ascended to the throne in 1995 at just three years old following his father's death and held the title of the world's youngest reigning traditional leader, was announced by Tooro Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki.
While kingdom officials did not disclose the exact cause of death, local media reports indicated that the young king had been receiving treatment in the USA for a serious illness.
31-YEAR REIGN
As the 13th monarch of the Tooro Kingdom, founded in the early 19th century, King Oyo held the cultural leadership of over two million people. Since he ascended to the throne as a child, a regency council, including the Queen Mother, governed the kingdom until he turned 18.
After coming of age, the king continued his role with full authority following an official coronation ceremony, earning the admiration of his people through his support for social projects such as youth empowerment, education, environmental protection, and HIV awareness.
CULTURAL HERITAGE AND NEW HEIR
In Uganda, which has an elected republican structure, traditional kingdoms hold no political authority but retain strong cultural influence and command great respect among the people.
Although King Oyo had no official marriage, Prime Minister Akiiki reported that the continuity of the throne was assured. It was announced that the king leaves behind a crown prince, and the identity of the new leader will be officially shared with the public in the coming days in accordance with kingdom traditions.

Meanwhile, King Oyo, who took the throne at age three, had succeeded in entering the Guinness World Records as the world's youngest reigning monarch.
