The landslide struck temporary barracks used by workers on the tunnel project, trapping many workers under the debris. Security camera footage recorded a mudslide sweeping away a fuel tanker and other vehicles.

In the incident where a massive mass of earth swallowed vehicles and people in the area, 3 people died and 9 were injured. It was reported that many individuals remain buried under the soil and that search and rescue operations are continuing.
When completed, the Wayanad Tunnel Project will be the country's third longest road tunnel.
