Leek harvest has begun in the Bafra Plain in Samsun, one of Turkey's important agricultural centers. While a yield of 16,000 tons is expected on 4,000 decares of land this season, producers are selling their products in the field at 18 to 20 lira per kilogram. Leeks sent to many provinces, including Istanbul, primarily the Black Sea and Central Anatolia, are among the important sources of livelihood for farmers in the region.

Harvesting of the leeks grown in the Bafra Plain, one of Turkey's important agricultural production centers, has begun.

Adem Aşçı, President of the Bafra Vegetable Producers Union, said that the leeks planted in the soil in June have begun to be harvested as of November.

THEY SELL IT ACROSS ALL OF TURKEY FOR 18 TO 20 LIRA PER KILOGRAM

Noting that leek production is carried out on 4,000 decares of land in the Bafra Plain, Aşçı said, “We ship the leeks we produce to all of the Black Sea Region as well as to various provinces of Turkey. They are sold in the field for 18 to 20 lira per kilogram. A yield of 16,000 tons of leeks is expected this season.”

Stating that the leeks fed by the water of the Kızılırmak are quite delicious, Aşçı used the expression, “We ask consumers to prefer the vegetables of the Bafra Plain in markets and bazaars. I wish the winter season to be auspicious and fruitful for all our farmers.”

“THE MAIN SOURCE OF LIVELIHOOD FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD RESIDENTS”

Leek producer Sezai Keskin, on the other hand, explained that they carry out a difficult process from seedling to harvest.

Stating that they started preparing seedlings in March and planted the seedlings around the end of June, Keskin noted the following: “The digging operations are carried out in September, October, or November, but in our region the harvest is generally concentrated in November. We deliver our products from the field to wholesale markets with invoices for between 18 and 20 lira. We send them to the Black Sea and Central Anatolia regions as well as to metropolises such as Istanbul. The leeks of Doğanca Neighborhood in particular are famous. The most leeks in the plain are grown here. It is the main source of livelihood for the neighborhood residents.”
