The cave where Ibrahim Tatlises was born, which was restored and converted into a museum house by the Haliliye Municipality in Sanliurfa, has fallen far short of expectations in the 2 years since its opening. The museum, which is not visited by even an average of one person per day and has a total visitor count of only 250, has sparked debates about its location and lack of promotion.
Within the scope of the restoration project carried out by Haliliye Municipality to highlight the historical and cultural heritage of Şanlıurfa, the cave where the famous artist İbrahim Tatlıses spent his childhood years was renovated in line with its original state and opened to visitors as a museum house. However, the project, which was launched with great hopes, fell far short of expectations in the 2 years since its opening.
HE HAD SAID "I AM PROUD TO HAVE BEEN BORN THERE"
The structure, turned into a museum, had left its mark on memories with İbrahim Tatlıses's past statements. The famous artist, who expressed on every occasion the meaning the place where he was born holds for him, had stated his pride in the cave with the words, "I am proud to have been born there." Despite Tatlıses's large fan base and the thousands of tourists the city hosts each year, the museum's being virtually deserted became a topic of debate on social media as well.
LACK OF PROMOTION AND LOCATION?
During the restoration works carried out under Haliliye Municipality, the natural structure of the cave was meticulously preserved, and elements reflecting sections from the artist's life were added to the interior.
Local sources argue that the inadequacy of location and promotion has been effective in the number of visitors dropping to even less than an average of 1 person per day. How the museum, opened with the aim of bringing vitality to regional tourism, will be evaluated in the upcoming period and whether a new step will be taken to increase visitor traffic remain a matter of curiosity.
