Tsegaab Binessu, an Ethiopian immigrant living in the U.S. state of Minnesota, shot and killed three employees of an apartment management company after an argument over a $65 parking contract he could not cancel. The suspect, who was apprehended after the incident, complained about the "American system" in his statement and has been charged with three counts of second-degree murder.
A shooting in St. Paul, Minnesota, has plunged the country into mourning. 30-year-old Ethiopian national Tsegaab Binessu opened fire at the management office after being unable to cancel his monthly $65 parking contract at his apartment complex.
Apartment management company employees Nansi Fuentes Zambrano (25), Dena Silcox (56), and Adam Wilwerding (43) were killed in the attack. The prosecution has charged Binessu with three counts of second-degree murder.
"SYSTEM" RESPONSE ENRAGED HIM According to the investigation file, Binessu called on the day of the incident to cancel his parking subscription. However, he was told that since he had recently renewed his contract, he had to continue paying the fee.
Officials said the operator on the phone stated it was company policy and the decision could not be changed. Binessu then said he would go to the office to discuss the matter in person.
Tsegaab Binessu ENTERED THE OFFICE, DREW HIS GUN, AND OPENED FIRE According to prosecution documents, the attacker entered the apartment’s rental office around 4:00 PM. Security camera footage shows him speaking briefly with two employees before lifting his shirt and drawing a handgun from his waistband.
It was reported that despite Adam Wilwerding trying to protect himself, shots were fired repeatedly, and Dena Silcox was shot multiple times while screaming "No, no, no." The footage continues with screams from the hallway, and Nansi Fuentes Zambrano, who was trying to flee, was also shot and killed. Police found a total of 21 spent shell casings at the scene.
CAUGHT WHILE FLEEING It was announced that Binessu, who fled the scene after the attack, was apprehended in the city of Virginia, approximately 320 kilometers away, in a car belonging to one of the killed employees, Nansi Fuentes Zambrano.
Camping equipment, a US passport, a social security card, an empty magazine, and a firearm carry permit were found in the vehicle. The suspect was wearing the same clothes as seen in the security camera footage.
EXPRESSED DISCONTENT WITH THE "AMERICAN SYSTEM" After being taken into custody and giving a statement, Binessu expressed his dissatisfaction with the "American system." According to officials, the suspect said he had been trying to bring his wife and children from Ethiopia to the US for seven years, during which his family fell apart and he got divorced. He also stated that he had lost his job, his peace, and his family, and that his life had lost meaning. However, Binessu did not confess to the murders, only admitting to going to the management office and arguing with the employees.
WILL BE TRIED IN CUSTODY The suspect made his first court appearance and was ordered to remain in custody. The trial is expected to begin in mid-August. Meanwhile, fundraising campaigns have been launched for the three employees who lost their lives in the attack, as apartment residents try to recover from the shock of the incident.
