In the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), the long-awaited interim wage increase decision was announced in order to protect the purchasing power of employees amid rising cost of living and high inflation. The critical meeting of the Minimum Wage Determination Commission resulted in a 16.95% increase by a majority vote. With the new regulation, the net minimum wage in the country has risen to 61,677 TL.
DETAILS OF THE NEW WAGE TARIFF
In line with the commission's decision, the new minimum wage tariff, which will come into effect after being published in the Official Gazette, has been finalized as follows:
- Net Monthly Wage: 61,677 TL
- Gross Monthly Wage: 70,893 TL
- Weekly Wage: 16,359.92 TL
- Daily Wage: 3,271.98 TL
- Hourly Wage: 408.99 TL
NET SALARY INCREASED BY 8,939 TL
The minimum wage, which was applied as 60,618 TL gross and 52,738 TL net in the first six months of 2026, has been increased by a net total of 8,939 TL with the latest update. Commission officials emphasized that this update was inevitable to alleviate the pressure created on employees by rapid changes in economic indicators and rising living costs.
WAGE DIFFERENCE WITH TURKEY INCREASED TO 2.2 TIMES
Following this latest increase in the TRNC, the net minimum wage of 61,677 TL on the island has reached approximately 2.2 times the net minimum wage of 28,075 TL applied in Turkey. However, economic experts warn that directly comparing these two nominal wage levels can be misleading. Experts state that structural economic dynamics such as exchange rate movements, tax obligations, social security systems, local price levels, and the general cost of living between the TRNC and Turkey are fundamental factors in the formation of this difference.
MULTIPLE ANNUAL INCREASE SYSTEM WILL CONTINUE
The flexible minimum wage determination system implemented in the TRNC plays a critical role in limiting the income loss of employees during periods of high inflation. It was stated that the commission, consisting of worker, employer, and government representatives, will closely monitor economic developments and may reconsider wages again in the upcoming period if deemed necessary.
