US President Donald Trump made a notable statement amid escalating trade tensions with Canada. Trump said they are seriously considering changing the name of Lake Ontario, located on the border between the US and Canada, to "Lake America."
"WE WILL NO LONGER DO MUCH BUSINESS WITH ONTARIO"
Trump made his statement on his Truth Social account. Stating that the US no longer expects to do much trade with Ontario, Trump said the idea of changing the lake's name is being seriously considered for this reason.
Lake Ontario is located between the US state of New York and the Canadian province of Ontario, along Toronto's northern shore.
TRADE TENSIONS WITH CANADA ARE ESCALATING
Trump's move came after trade talks between the two countries concluded without results. Over the weekend, the US administration began imposing a 50 percent customs duty on approximately $20 billion worth of products coming from Canada. Canada is also expected to announce retaliatory tariffs against the US.
Trump's proposed name change for Lake Ontario also brought to mind his earlier attempt to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America."
"LAKE AMERICA" PROPOSAL MAKES HEADLINES
Trump's statement led to comments that the tension between Canada and the US has moved beyond an economic dispute. The name change proposal also drew attention because Lake Ontario is one of the significant waterways shared by the two countries.
