Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya denied the recent claims regarding the driver amnesty, stating, "It is definitely not on our agenda. As of April 19, 2025, the number of drivers whose licenses have been temporarily revoked and not returned is 689,946."

STRIKING STATEMENT FROM MINISTER YERLİKAYA

Minister Yerlikaya, in a statement made from his X account, said the following: "I want to express this clearly and unequivocally: The issue of 'driver amnesty' is definitely not on our agenda. As of April 19, 2025, the number of drivers whose licenses have been 'temporarily revoked and not returned' is 689,946. So why were these drivers' licenses temporarily revoked?"

Because;

499,088 drivers had their licenses revoked

  • For driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs,
  • For refusing the alcohol measurement test;

28,461 drivers had their licenses revoked

  • For accumulating 100 penalty points within a year,
  • For speeding 5 times within a year,
  • For running a red light 3 times,
  • For drifting, and
  • For possessing illegal emergency lights;

162,397 drivers' documents were

Temporarily revoked due to legal proceedings (involvement in fatal/injury traffic accidents, health conditions, etc.).

Today, there is a very clear reality behind every application that led to the temporary revocation of driver's licenses. That is:

Severe violations that disregard traffic safety. Serious irresponsibility that can lead to loss of life and property.

Our concern is not to impose penalties; it is to prevent accidents and to stop the extinguishing of households.

The measures we have taken are aimed at ensuring peace and safety on our roads, and they are measures that aim to protect lives.

Every inspection we conduct, every precaution we take, is to wipe away a mother's tears and to prevent a child from becoming an orphan.

And for this reason, we will never step back from our uncompromising stance against those who violate the rules."
