Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, stating that one of the reasons for strengthening his country's armed forces is 'deterrence' against Turkey, expressed that he does not expect the issues that have remained unresolved with Ankara for nearly 40 years to be resolved immediately.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis answered questions about the country's agenda and international developments during an interview at the Delphi Economic Forum. Turkey was also on Mitsotakis's agenda.
"LIVING SIDE BY SIDE IS OUR DESTINY"
In response to journalist Robert D. Kaplan's question, "How does Greece manage its relations with Turkey looking to the future? Turkey has strengthened after the fall of the regime in Syria, and it has significant water reserves and an enviable geographical position," Mitsotakis replied: "It is our destiny to live side by side due to geography. Of course, our aim is to live peacefully side by side and to solve the existing problems."
"WE MUST BE A DETERRENT FORCE AGAINST TURKEY"
Mitsotakis expressed that he does not expect the immediate resolution of issues that have remained unresolved with Turkey for nearly 40 years, but this does not mean that there will be no dialogue with Turkey or cooperation on projects that will provide mutual benefits. Mitsotakis stated, "On the other hand, we are not naive. Greece must always be a reliable deterrent force against Turkey. One of the reasons for strengthening our armed forces and participating in discussions on European security and strategic independence is this."
"I AM OPTIMISTIC BUT REALISTIC"
Pointing out that he has met with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan many times, Mitsotakis stated that although no results have been achieved yet, these meetings are important for both sides to understand each other and the areas of disagreement, as well as to keep communication channels open. Mitsotakis said, "I am optimistic but realistic in managing relations with Turkey."
