Soad Mohamed, mother of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi, died early Monday, presidency announces.

The mother of Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, Soad Mohamed, passed away early Monday morning, according to a statement issued by the presidency.



A government source had earlier said that Mohamed had died at a Cairo hospital, adding that her funeral would be held in the New Cairo suburb this afternoon.



Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab has reportedly cut short a visit to the Upper Egyptian city of Luxor to attend the funeral services.



Sisi, a former military chief, assumed the presidency last year, one year after leading the army to unseat democratically-elected President Mohamed Morsi in a 2013 military coup. - Mısır
