The police statement of former AKUT President Nasuh Mahruki, arrested due to a social media post regarding the July 15 coup attempt, has emerged. Acknowledging the post as his own, Mahruki argued that the intervention in the coup attempt was delayed and stated that his post did not aim to incite the public to hatred and hostility, rejecting the accusations with the words, "The winner of this coup is the USA. I did not commit the crime I am accused of. I did not make the post with such an intention."
An investigation has been launched ex officio by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding former AKUT President Nasuh Mahruki due to a post he made on his social media account about the July 15 coup attempt. Mahruki, who was taken into custody on charges of "inciting the public to hatred and hostility or degrading," was arrested by the court to which he was referred after his procedures at the police station and sent to prison.
POLICE STATEMENT REVEALED
Following the arrest decision, Mahruki's statement given at the Security Directorate Public Security Bureau Office before being referred to the courthouse has emerged.
"I MADE THE SOCIAL MEDIA POST"
In his statement, Mahruki stated that the social media account subject to the investigation belongs to him and that he made the post, saying, "This post contained information from prior to July 15, in official state records, about the investigation conducted by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, indicating preparation within the military by the organization then known as the Gülen movement. The major's statement included a tip about preparations being made 40 days earlier. It is also known that Russian intelligence had issued a warning on this matter. Additionally, there is a statement by the then MIT Undersecretary Hakan Fidan that he was personally warned by the then Chief of General Staff Hulusi Akar.
"251 OF OUR CITIZENS LOST THEIR LIVES"
Regarding the arrests within the military, since relevant state units knew the Gülen movement would be purged before the Supreme Military Council decisions, they had to bring forward such an uprising; indeed, they were caught off guard. In this process, the President stated he learned of the uprising from his brother-in-law after it started; thus, relevant state units were aware of the uprising from multiple sources but intervened belatedly. Therefore, 251 of our citizens lost their lives. The Police Special Operations Department was bombed by aircraft, resulting in many martyrs. This heavy toll has deeply pained me, like every Turkish Republic citizen. This is the main issue I criticize—why this delay occurred. If timely intervention had been made, we would not have lost 251 martyrs," he said.
"I DID NOT COMMIT THE CRIME OF INCITING THE PUBLIC TO HATRED, HOSTILITY, OR DEGRADATION"
Continuing his statement, suspect Mahruki said, "The issue is the transformation of presidential powers into a unity of powers in the new era. By 'dull,' I refer to the Turkish nation losing the principle of separation of powers in the parliamentary system. Regarding the post, I did not commit the alleged crime of 'inciting the public to hatred, hostility, or degradation.' I do not understand how they derived the accusation from this post. I did not make the post with such intent. My main criticism is directed at the USA and the relevant state units that failed to prevent the Gülen movement's coup attempt despite knowing about it in advance. The winner of this coup is the USA. Since I did not commit the alleged crime, I request to be released," he stated.
