Notable developments occurred in the trial regarding the murder of Gülizar B., a mother of three who disappeared in Diyarbakır in 2015 and whose body was found burned in a cave. Her husband H.B., who visited the grave of the woman whose identity was determined by DNA analysis 10 years later, is also being tried as a defendant in the murder case. While the ex-wife of detained defendant Mehmet Biroğlu was heard as a witness in court, it was decided to continue the current status of the defendants.

The trial of detained defendant Mehmet Biroğlu and the woman's husband, non-detained defendant H.B., continued regarding the murder of Gülizar B., whose burned body was found among rocks in a cave in a rural area of Çermik district of Diyarbakır in 2015.

DEFENDANT'S EX-WIFE TESTIFIES

Detained defendant Mehmet Biroğlu and lawyers were present at the hearing at Ergani High Criminal Court; non-detained defendant H.B. did not attend. F.A., the ex-wife of detained defendant Biroğlu, was heard as a witness via the Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBİS). Repeating the statements she gave during the investigation, F.A. said, "I do not know whether there was a romantic relationship between my ex-husband and Gülizar."

REQUESTED HIS RELEASE

In his opinion, the public prosecutor stated that the defendants should remain in their current status and the deficiencies in the file should be remedied. Defendant Biroğlu, rejecting the accusations attributed to him, requested that a decision be made for his release. Defendant Biroğlu's lawyer requested that a decision be made for the release of his client, and defendant H.B.'s lawyer requested that the judicial control decision concerning his client be lifted. The court panel decided that the defendants should remain in their current status and adjourned the hearing to November 5.

SENTENCE SOUGHT

In the indictment, aggravated life imprisonment and imprisonment from 2 to 7 years are sought for detained defendant Mehmet Biroğlu and the murdered woman's husband, non-detained defendant H.B., on charges of "deliberate killing of a woman by design with monstrous feeling" and "deprivation of liberty." Additionally, imprisonment from 2 months to 1 year is sought for H.B. on the charge of "ill-treatment."

HE HAD VISITED HIS WIFE'S GRAVE

Relatives of Gülizar B., a married mother of 3 who did not return to her home after leaving in Dicle district of Diyarbakır on July 29, 2015, filed a missing person report; on August 9, 2015, a family picnicking in the rural Petekkaya Neighborhood of Çermik district noticed an odor and reported the situation to gendarmerie teams. Teams from the District Gendarmerie Command dispatched to the scene encountered a burned body in the cave, and since it could not be determined during the autopsy to whom the body belonged, the funeral was buried in the unclaimed persons section of Yeniköy Cemetery in Diyarbakır.

During that period, the investigation was deepened by the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office to shed light on the murder whose perpetrator could not be identified, and upon the instruction of the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, a special team was formed by the Provincial Gendarmerie Command Gendarmerie Crime Investigation Team (JASAT), the Criminal Branch Directorate, and the Çermik District Gendarmerie Command. In the work carried out by the Provincial Gendarmerie Command and JASAT, considering the possibility that the body belonged to Gülizar B., for whom a missing person report had been filed at the Diyarbakır Kayapınar Huzur Police Center Branch in 2015, it was decided upon the instruction of the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office to merge the two files concerning the missing person and the body.

Within the scope of the investigation, Mehmet Biroğlu, who was determined to have frequently had phone conversations with Gülizar B. in HTS records previously, was taken into custody and arrested on May 20, and the identity of the body was determined 10 years later through a repeated DNA examination and facial reconstruction work. In line with the evidence obtained as a result of the DNA examination, HTS, and narrowed base studies, Biroğlu, who was transferred from Diyarbakır Type T Closed Prison to the Diyarbakır Courthouse again, was re-interrogated, and his detention was decided to continue.

It was determined through narrowed base station work that defendant Biroğlu went to the scene 7 times approximately 4.5 months after the incident. After 10 years, the family was informed by gendarmerie teams that Gülizar B.'s grave was in Yeniköy Cemetery; upon this, the murdered woman's husband H.B. and his two brothers-in-law visited the grave and conveyed their thanks to the gendarmerie teams for their work.
