Airbnb, the accommodation platform, has announced new rules limiting the tasks hosts can ask guests to do. Under the regulation, which will apply to all reservations made on and after November 20, guests who pay a cleaning fee cannot be asked to do tasks such as washing dishes, gathering sheets, or taking out the trash. Hosts also cannot impose financial penalties on guests.

The accommodation platform Airbnb has announced new rules limiting the tasks hosts can ask guests to do. According to BBC's report, the new regulation will apply to all reservations made through the platform on or after 20 November.

Under the updated rules, hosts will be able to set seven standard house rules and, in addition to these, make "reasonable" requests. Guests who have to pay a cleaning fee, however, cannot be asked to perform tasks normally done by a cleaner.

DISHES, SHEETS AND TRASH REMOVED FROM THE LIST

According to the new terms on Airbnb's website, hosts will not be able to ask guests to do tasks that "require significant effort or time." These include stripping bed sheets, taking out the trash, and washing dishes and putting them away.

The company stated that exceptions may be made in some cases. For example, in areas with local water restrictions due to drought, guests may be asked to keep showers short.

HOSTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO IMPOSE FINES

House rules will from now on be shown more visibly to guests and will also appear in booking reminders. Hosts will not be able to impose fines; requiring a signed contract will only be allowed in cases required by law or building management rules. Requests that do not comply with the policy will be flagged, and the host can appeal this decision.

In its statement, Airbnb said, "House rules help guests understand hosts' expectations, but we've heard from our community that they can be confusing, burdensome and difficult to manage." Guests had complained for years about tasks they were asked to do before leaving despite paying a cleaning fee.
