Turkey was shaken by the pain of the earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 7.6 that struck 11 provinces centered in Kahramanmaraş, described as the "disaster of the century," two years ago in February. On February 6, an earthquake of 7.7 magnitude occurred in the Pazarcık district of Kahramanmaraş at 04:17, and another earthquake of 7.6 magnitude occurred in the Elbistan district at 13:24. In the disaster of the century, which struck not only Kahramanmaraş but also Hatay, Osmaniye, Adıyaman, Diyarbakır, Şanlıurfa, Gaziantep, Kilis, Adana, Malatya, and Elazığ, 53,537 people lost their lives, and 107,213 people were injured.
LEVEL 4 ALARM WAS ISSUED
After the earthquake, for which Turkey issued a level 4 alarm including international aid, search and rescue teams from 93 countries participated in the efforts in the region. The earthquakes, which directly affected 14 million citizens over an area of 120,000 square kilometers, caused severe destruction in 11 provinces, 124 districts, and 6,929 villages and neighborhoods. A national mourning was declared for 7 days across the country, while a state of emergency was declared in the earthquake zone.
NEW FOOTAGE HAS EMERGED
The earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023, centered in Kahramanmaraş also caused destruction in Osmaniye. While 1,010 people lost their lives in the city, thousands were injured. On the second anniversary of the February 6 earthquakes, which were described as the "disaster of the century," the Osmaniye Police Department shared recordings of announcements reflected on police radios and footage captured by security cameras.
The footage shows that all security personnel were requested to gather in the security building during the radio announcement, and initial information regarding the destruction was also announced over the radio.
