Greenland Prime Minister Mute Bourup Egede stated that he has not met with the elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, but is "open" to it.

"GREENLAND BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE OF GREENLAND"

Speaking at a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Egede commented on Trump's statements regarding his country. He acknowledged that his country is seen by Americans as "part of their world," saying, "Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland. We do not want to be Danish or American. We want to be Greenlandic."

"WE ARE READY TO MEET WITH TRUMP"

On the other hand, Egede, who stated that he has not met with Trump, expressed his readiness to discuss "unifying elements" with him.

Egede said, "Cooperation is linked to dialogue and means that work will be done towards a solution."

TRUMP HAD OPENLY ADMITTED HE WANTED GREENLAND

Trump, who is preparing to take office in the U.S., reiterated his statement on December 23, 2024, on his Truth Social account, claiming that Greenland should be under his country's control, arguing that owning and controlling the island is an "absolute necessity."

Trump's remarks had drawn reactions from many, especially Greenland officials.

Prime Minister Egede stated in a written statement to AA correspondent, "Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We will not lose our long-standing struggle for freedom."

TRUMP HAD IMPLIED HE MIGHT USE MILITARY FORCE

On January 8, Trump responded to a question about whether he would commit to not using military force to control the Panama Canal and Greenland, saying, "No, I cannot assure you (that I won't use military force regarding these two). We may need to do something. We need these for our economic security."

Trump claimed that the Panama Canal was built for the U.S. military but is now operated by China, stating, "The Panama Canal is vital for our country. We gave the Panama Canal to Panama, but it is now operated by China. We did not give this to China."

Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino stated, "The sovereignty of our canal is non-negotiable. The only power that controls the canal is Panama, and it will continue to be so."

Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martinez-Acha also noted that the Panama Canal is part of his country's struggle for full sovereignty, stating, "The Panama Canal is an irreversible conquest."
