In the vote held in the Iraqi Parliament, the candidate of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Nizar Amedi, was elected as the country's new president. In the 329-seat parliament, 229 representatives voted, and in the second round, Amedi received 227 votes.

KYB'S CANDIDATE ELECTED PRESIDENT IN IRAQ In the voting held in the Parliament, Nizar Amedi (58), the candidate of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), was elected President with 227 votes in the second round of voting in the 329-seat parliament. A total of 229 deputies voted.
According to the political equation established in Iraq after 2003, the president is elected from among the candidates of Kurdish parties.
AMEDI TOOK OATH AND ASSUMED OFFICE For this position, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) nominated the current Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, while the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) nominated Nizar Amedi. A total of 17 candidates, including the KDP and PUK nominees, competed for the position. After being elected, Amedi took an oath in the parliament and began his duties.

NEW GOVERNMENT NOT FORMED FOR A LONG TIME According to the Iraqi Constitution, the President is tasked with appointing the candidate of the largest bloc (Shia) in parliament to form the government within a maximum of 15 days after being elected. Parliamentary elections in Iraq were held on November 11, 2025. Due to political disagreements in the country, a new government has not yet been formed.
The current government continues its duties as a "caretaker government." The new President has also served as the head of the PUK's Baghdad office, as well as an advisor to the Iraqi Presidency and the Minister of Environment.
WHO IS NIZAR AMEDI? Nizar Muhammed Said Amedi, born in 1968 in the Amedi district of Duhok, is a senior politician of engineering background. Amedi began his political career within the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and served in the party's general secretary office between 1993-2003; since 2005, he has provided high-level consultancy to former presidents such as Jalal Talabani, Fuad Masum, and Barham Salih. Serving as Iraq's Minister of Environment from 2022 to 2024, Amedi represented Iraq at many international climate summits during this period and has played critical roles in the reconciliation processes in the country as a member of the PUK Political Bureau and the party's Baghdad representative. He was elected as Iraq's new President by receiving 227 votes in the second round of voting held in the Iraqi Parliament on April 11, 2026.
